Catalog Description

  • Implementation of the finite element methods: Mixed formulations. Plate bending. Time dependent problems in solid mechanics and heat transfer. Introduction to nonlinear problems.

  • ME 5610 – Finite Elements

  • Review of linear and non-linear shape functions
  • Numeric integration, reduced integration
  • Numerics in computing. Floating points vs integers (binary numbers), numeric precision, matrix condition. GPUs vs CPUs
  • Solvers. Direct and iterative. Conjugate gradient methods.
  • Interpolation: incompatible modes, hierarchical elements (h,p,hp refinement methods)
  • Normal modes, natural frequencies, buckling, unstable collapse (Riks method)
  • Dynamics: implicit dynamics, explicit dynamics, modal methods, subspace methods (mechanical and thermal)
  • Non-conforming elements and the patch test
  • Shear locking
  • Plate bending
  • Non-linear materials: Rayleigh Ritz Method, plasticity
  • Error estimation
  • Implimentation (build your own code)
  • Multi-scale models

Assignments due at the beginning of class.

Working Together: For homework assignments, students are encouraged to discuss solution methods with their colleagues. Written work must be done independently and must accurately represent the work of the student.

All exams and quizzes are to be completed independently.

Absences: Attendance and discussion are a vital part of this class. Please make every effort to attend. If you will be absent, advise the instructor in advance.
